Oranda (1987)
In the mid eighties Dutch photocopier manufacturers Océ, like other
copier makers before them, entered the printer market. From this came
the desire to have their own typeface. Because Océ were big in
the office market, when I designed Oranda I had a look at typewriter fonts
and came up with a subtler and more modern variant: narrower, more open,
with tapered serifs and proportional spacing. Alongside the usual versions
— roman and italic in both normal and bold — I also added
two narrow, informal variants. In the end, Océ did little with
Oranda and the type was ultimately provided with small capitals and brought
out by Bitstream.
